Abstract

This study analyzes at how emotional messages are conveyed through figurative language in NIKI's album Nicole. The album features a collection of songs that reflect personal experiences, emotional vulnerability, and self-reflection in an indirect but meaningful manner using poetic language. Rather than expressing emotions literally, NIKI employs figurative expressions to convey feelings of love, heartbreak, nostalgia, and emotional growth, allowing listeners to engage more deeply with the lyrics. This study takes a qualitative descriptive approach, analyzing five selected songs from the album: Backburner, The Apartment We Won't Share, Anaheim, Oceans & Engines, and Take a Chance with Me. The analysis focuses on identifying types of figurative language and interpreting the emotional meanings behind them. The study is supported by semantic theory and figurative language theory, particularly the classification proposed by Keraf. Data were collected through close observation and careful examination of the song lyrics. The findings show that metaphor is the most frequently used type of figurative language in the selected songs, followed by hyperbole, personification, simile, idiom, and irony. These figurative expressions play an important role in shaping the emotional depth of the lyrics and help transform personal feelings into experiences that feel relatable to listeners. This study suggests that figurative language is not only a stylistic element in songwriting, but also a powerful tool for expressing complex emotions. Therefore, song lyrics can be viewed as a meaningful form of literary expression that captures human emotions in a natural and artistic way.
