Abstract

This study analyze the movie script Orion and The dark (2024). Orion and The Dark tells about Orion a boy in facing the fear and anxiety of darkness. Orion and The Dark movie script written by Chalie Kaufman in total 122 pages. Orion is an 11 year old boy who is still in school. He is a shy boy and has many fears, but his biggest fear is darkness. This study qualitative and narrative analysis and using Sigmund Freud’s theory of anxiety and defense mechanism, also using Joseph M. Boggs and Dennis W. Petrie framework of characterization, plot, and setting to literary analysis. By using psychological theory, this research aims analyze and explain how does the darkness anxiety experienced by Orion in the “Orion in The Dark (2024)” movie script, and also analyze and explain how does Orion self defense mechanism to overcome the darkness anxiety according to Sigmund Freud psychoanalysis theory. The data collective technique used through the note taking methods to find elements that are related to the darkness anxiety and defense mechanism. Thus,result showed that Orion’s darkness anxiety appears through intrinsic elements, particularly characterization, plot, and setting. Through dialogue, internal actions, and external behavior, Orion is consistently portrayed as a child who experiences excessive worry, and emotional vulnerability. His fear of darkness is shown to be irrational, and internally generated, indicating the presence of anxiety rather than realistic fear. Orion’s darkness anxiety activates a wide range of defense mechanism, including denial, repression, projection, displacement, rationalization, fantasy, and sublimation.
