Abstract

This study aimed to analyze violations of Grice’s maxims in the movie script “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)”. In pragmatics, Grice’s Cooperative Principle consists of four maxims: quantity, quality, relation, and manner. Violating these maxims can disrupt effective communication and often reveal implied meanings in utterances. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method to identify and explain the types of maxim violations and the reasons behind them, based on the context of the dialogues in the movie script. Data were collected using note-taking techniques and analyzed through Grice’s theory of Cooperative Principle. The findings show that the most frequently violated maxim is relation, followed by violations of quality, quantity, and manner. The reasons behind these violations include concealing information, avoiding sensitive topics, creating humor, and protecting self-image. This research provides a deeper understanding of how the cooperative principle is applied in movie script and serves as a reference for studies in pragmatics, communication, and discourse analysis.
