Abstract

This study discusses the flouting of Grice's Cooperative Principle in the script of the 2024 movie Inside Out 2. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of maxims flouted by the characters in the script and to analyse the context behind the flouting. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data in the form of character dialogues in the script of the movie Inside Out 2. The results of the analysis show that all four types of maxims are flouted by various characters such as Joy, Anger, Disgust, Riley, and others. The maxim of quality is the most frequently flouted, followed by quantity, relevance, and manner. These floutings do not indicate a failure of communication, but rather serve as a means to convey implied meanings such as irony, sarcasm, humor, hidden emotions, and unspoken desires.
