Abstract

This study examined figurative language in song lyrics through semantic theory. This study applied semantic theories to examine both literal meaning and figurative language in J Hus’s 2020 album Big Conspiracy. This study followed a qualitative research approach. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The object of this study is the album by J Hus called Big Conspiracy. The research data consisted of lyrics from the album Big Conspiracy, obtained from the Genius website. In this analysis, this study examined five types of figurative language: personification, simile, hyperbole, metaphor, and symbolism. When classified by figure of speech, the dataset contains 5 instances of personification, 15 instances of simile, 18 instances of hyperbole, 26 instances of metaphor, and 10 instances of symbolism. In total, 74 data points were analyzed. Across five types of figurative language, similes and metaphors appear most often, while personification appeared least often. After the analysis, the results of each datum were clearer. Across the album, J Hus expressed through his lyrics to address coping with societal repression, hardiness against the conflicting realities of street culture, and the search for one self in spiritual way in settings shaped by paranoia and violence. He also presented Afroswing, a music genre that combined rap and African slang words as an expression of cultural identity and reflected on forms of social betrayal, including surveillance and unequal justice.
