Abstract

This term paper takes the material titled A Haunting in Venice movie script (2023) written by Michael Green, which features the renowned detective Hercule Poirot in an investigation with supernatural undertones. Beneath his genius, Poirot possesses complex psychological defense mechanisms. This research aims to analyze the defense mechanisms employed by Poirot to cope with past trauma and the challenges presented by a case involving supernatural elements. This study utilizes a qualitative approach with content analysis of Poirot's dialogues, actions, and interactions within the film. Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of defense mechanisms serves as the theoretical framework for data analysis. Poirot's defense mechanisms are an integral part of his character. This research provides a deeper understanding of Poirot's psychological complexity and how these mechanisms shape his interactions with the world around him, especially when faced with unusual cases like the one in A Haunting in Venice movie script.
